Bike Polite reflective band

Brief

Spokes, the Lothian Cycling Campaign, have long been aware that a minority of inconsiderate cyclists act as poor ambassadors for the majority of careful riders. They launched the Bike Polite education project, aimed at raising cyclists' awareness of their impact on other road and path users.

When Spokes approached us to talk about publicity materials for Bike Polite, the assumption was that leaflets and posters were the way to go.

Outcome

After some brainstorming, we realised that giving cyclists something of value that they would keep would be more effective in getting the message across.

We researched weatherproof promotional items and sourced a 'slap-band' - a reflective band that wraps itself around a wrist or ankle with a simple flick. We designed logos for the campaign's four main messages and had them screen-printed onto the bands.

The Bike Polite campaign was winner of the 2007 Innovation Award from Cycling Scotland.
